z A Small Change, A Big Improvement ; Our New Tamping Station Pad Design – The Knock Drawer Co. index

At The Knock Drawer Co., we believe good product design is rarely about dramatic reinvention.

More often, it comes from refining the small details. Improving the parts that get used every day. Removing weak points. Increasing consistency. Making something feel just a little more solid, more reliable, more considered.

That philosophy is behind our latest update to the rubber pad system used in our tamping stations.

At first glance, the change is small.

But like many engineering improvements, the real difference is in how the product performs over time.

Why the Tamping Station Pad Matters

A tamping station might seem like a simple piece of equipment, but it does an important job in day-to-day use.

It keeps the portafilter stable while tamping.
It protects the work surface.
And just as importantly, it prevents metal-on-metal contact between the portafilter and the stainless steel body of the station itself.

That rubber interface makes a real difference.

It absorbs impact.
It improves the feel during use.
And it helps protect both the equipment and the overall workflow.

Like every part of a busy coffee setup or indeed, a busy home set-up, it also takes a beating over time. Hundreds of tamping cycles, day after day, eventually expose the difference between something that’s simply made… and something that’s properly engineered.

That’s why we decided to improve ours.

Our Previous Design

Previously, the rubber pad used on our tamping stations was precision cut and fixed into place on the stainless steel top surface.

The system worked well and protected the portafilter exactly as intended.

But as with any manufactured product, we’re always looking for ways to improve fit, consistency, and long-term durability.

We wanted a solution that felt more integrated into the product itself. More precise, better engineered.

The New Tamping Station Pad Design

Our updated design uses a flexible printed rubber pad with four integrated locating feet.

These feet positively click into recessed holes in the stainless steel body of the tamping station, creating a secure mechanical fixing.

The result is a cleaner, more refined system that improves consistency while maintaining the same protection and stability our tamping stations are known for.

The new design provides:

  • Cleaner, more consistent finish
  • Positive mechanical fixing
  • Improved durability and longevity
  • More accurate pad positioning
  • A more refined overall feel

The pad continues to protect the portafilter from direct contact with the stainless steel surface while maintaining the solid, stable feel expected from commercial coffee equipment.

Designed for Real Coffee Environments

Our products are built for real-world use in cafés, roasteries, and home coffee setups.

That means designing for:

  • Daily mechanical stress
  • Repeated workflow movement
  • Long-term durability
  • Consistent fit and finish
  • Reliable performance over time

Every design decision is made with longevity in mind.

Not just how the product looks when it leaves the workshop, but how it performs months and years later.

Precision Engineered. Built to Last.

The updated tamping station pad is a small change in the overall design.

But it reflects the way we approach every product we manufacture.

Coffee equipment should feel solid, reliable, & consistent to use every time.

Good engineering shouldn’t shout for attention (although the lads in the workshop do love a clap on the back for all their hard work from time to time). Good engineering should simply make the workflow smoother, cleaner, and more dependable.

And the equipment people rely on every day should be built to cope with real daily use.

Precision engineered. Built to last.
